El proyecto, que comenz\u00f3 en 2018, se enfoca en modernizar la infraestructura para enfrentar los desaf\u00edos causados por la sedimentaci\u00f3n natural en el embalse La Esmeralda, que ha afectado el funcionamiento de la central tras 44 a\u00f1os de operaci\u00f3n.<br \/><br \/>Con el riesgo de taponamiento creciente por la sedimentaci\u00f3n, AES Colombia ha iniciado la construcci\u00f3n de una nueva bocatoma a un nivel superior, lo que permitir\u00e1 garantizar el flujo de agua hacia la casa de m\u00e1quinas y la generaci\u00f3n continua de energ\u00eda. Adem\u00e1s, el proyecto contempla la posibilidad de construir dos bocatomas adicionales para asegurar la captaci\u00f3n de agua en el futuro.<br \/><br \/>La modernizaci\u00f3n de la Central Hidroel\u00e9ctrica de Chivor tiene una capacidad de generaci\u00f3n de 1.000 megavatios, lo que equivale al consumo energ\u00e9tico de m\u00e1s de 4 millones de hogares en Colombia. El embalse de Chivor tiene una capacidad de almacenamiento de 1.103 gigavatios hora, suficiente para cubrir m\u00e1s de cinco d\u00edas de demanda nacional.<br \/><br \/>El Gobernador de Boyac\u00e1, Ramiro Barrag\u00e1n Adame, destac\u00f3 la importancia de esta inversi\u00f3n, se\u00f1alando que \u00abBoyac\u00e1 nutre al pa\u00eds en agua, alimento y energ\u00eda\u00bb, y resalt\u00f3 c\u00f3mo este proyecto contribuir\u00e1 a una energ\u00eda m\u00e1s amigable con el ambiente para millones de
